Wythe County, VA (October 17, 2025) – A multi-vehicle collision on Interstate 81 southbound near mile marker 66 on October 15 resulted in injuries to two commercial drivers and three law enforcement officers who bravely rushed to save them, according to the Virginia State Police (VSP).
The crash occurred shortly after 4:00 a.m., when multiple vehicles were involved in a collision that left one of the commercial trucks on fire. A Virginia state trooper pulled one driver to safety, while two Wythe County Sheriff’s Office deputies rescued the second trapped driver.
All three officers were taken to a nearby hospital for smoke inhalation and were later released after treatment. Both truck drivers were also hospitalised—one suffering injuries from the burning vehicle and the other from a Toyota Corolla involved in the crash.
Southbound traffic on I-81 was temporarily halted while emergency crews extinguished the fire and cleared the wreckage. Authorities commended the quick actions of the officers, which likely prevented further loss of life.
