Washington Co., VA – School Bus and Tractor-Trailer Crash Injures Student on I-81
Washington County, VA (August 13, 2025) – On the afternoon of August 12, a school bus carrying 21 students from Emory & Henry University was involved in a crash with a tractor-trailer on I-81 North, just outside Abingdon. Virginia State Police reported that the collision occurred around 12:19 p.m. when the tractor-trailer rear-ended the bus.
The students, aged between 17 and 21, were on their way from the university when the impact occurred. One student sustained a non-life-threatening injury and was treated on-site before being cleared to leave with the group. The bus driver managed to keep the vehicle stable after the crash, preventing further harm.
Virginia State Police cited the tractor-trailer driver for following too closely. The bus was able to drive away from the scene after being inspected for safety, while the truck sustained more noticeable front-end damage. Authorities investigated the crash and cleared the roadway.
Our thoughts are with the injured student, and we wish them a speedy recovery.
