Rockbridge Co., VA – One Dead, Multiple Injured in Crash on I-81MM 181

Rockbridge County, VA (September 28, 2025) – A devastating chain-reaction crash involving six tractor-trailers, a medical transport van, and three additional vehicles claimed one life and injured multiple people on Interstate 81 near Mile Marker 181 on Thursday, September 25.

Virginia State Police reported that the crash unfolded in heavy weather conditions, triggering a series of collisions across several lanes. A medical helicopter was initially requested to airlift the seriously injured driver of the transport van to a Roanoke hospital. However, due to unsafe flying conditions, the patient was instead transported by ground to a Rockbridge County medical facility. Additional victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were assisted by EMS personnel at the scene.
