Binghamton, NY – One Killed in Fiery Three-Vehicle Crash on I-81 Near Exit 12
Binghamton, NY (October 11, 2025) – The Broome County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal three-vehicle collision that occurred on October 9 on Interstate 81 southbound, near Exit 12 in Binghamton.
Authorities report that the crash happened around 11:05 a.m., when emergency responders were called to the scene of a U-Haul truck fire with the driver trapped inside. Firefighters and medical personnel worked to extricate the driver, who was then transported to UHS Wilson Medical Center for treatment. Sadly, the victim was pronounced dead at approximately 12:40 p.m.
Preliminary findings from the Broome County Sheriff’s Accident Reconstruction Unit indicate that the U-Haul, which was towing a vehicle, had been traveling southbound on I-81 after merging from Route 17 eastbound. A red SUV, also merging from Route 17, reportedly tried to cross several lanes to reach the Exit 12 off-ramp, striking the U-Haul in the process. The impact caused the U-Haul to lose control and crash into a New York State Department of Transportation (NYS DOT) attenuator truck, sparking the fire.
Emergency crews quickly contained the blaze and reopened affected lanes after several hours of closure. The identity of the deceased driver has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin.
The Broome County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the incident.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the victim during this challenging time.
