Wythe Co., VA – Multiple Injuries After Fiery Multi-Truck Wreck on I-81 SB/MM 66

Wythe County, VA (October 15, 2025) – Several people were hurt early Wednesday morning, October 15, after a chain of events led to a violent crash and fire on I-81 southbound near mile marker 66. According to the Virginia State Police, the incident began around 4:16 a.m. when a 2006 Toyota Corolla veered off the roadway and struck a guardrail. The driver exited the vehicle, leaving it disabled in the left lane. Two commercial trucks traveling southbound tried to avoid the stopped car and its driver but collided with one another, causing both rigs to overturn.

One of the trucks caught fire shortly after the impact. A Virginia State Trooper rushed to assist one driver trapped in the wreckage, while two Wythe County deputies helped free the second driver from the burning vehicle. All three officers were later treated and released from the hospital after suffering smoke inhalation. The driver of the burning truck sustained serious injuries and was transported to a nearby medical facility for continued treatment. The Corolla driver and the second truck driver were taken to hospitals with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Investigators with Virginia State Police are still working to determine the circumstances that led to the initial crash and the resulting collisions.

We wish all those injured a safe and complete recovery.
