Washington Co., VA – Crash on I-81 at MM 26 Leaves One Dead, Two Hurt
Washington County, VA (August 25, 2025) – A tragic collision on Friday evening, August 22, left one person dead and two others injured on Interstate 81 southbound in Washington County, according to Virginia State Police. The crash happened at mile marker 26 shortly after 6:00 p.m. Investigators reported that a 1997 Ford E-150 van traveling in the left lane was struck by a 2000 International 9200I tractor-trailer attempting to change lanes.
The impact forced the van into a guardrail before it veered into the median and collided with a concrete pillar. The tractor-trailer also came to rest in the median with visible damage.
Sadly, the van’s driver, identified as 90-year-old Jimmie L. Fields of Lewis Center, Ohio, died at the scene. A passenger inside the Ford sustained severe injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. The tractor-trailer driver also suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
The Virginia State Police confirmed that charges against the truck driver are pending as their investigation continues. The crash forced lane closures for several hours while crews cleared debris and completed initial accident reconstruction.
Our hearts go out to the family of Mr. Fields during this difficult time, and we wish the injured victims a speedy and full recovery.
