LaFayette, NY (July 27, 2025) – A serious three-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle and two tractor-trailers occurred on the morning of Saturday, July 26, along Interstate 81 northbound near LaFayette, resulting in critical injuries for a local motorcyclist. , LaFayette, NY – Motorcyclist Injured in Three-Vehicle Crash on I-81 NBAccording to the New York State Police, the incident happened around 7:38 a.m. when a 2001 Peterbilt tractor-trailer, driven by 42-year-old Sean M. Ayers of Dundee, experienced a tire blowout in the driving lane. Ayers began slowing down in an attempt to pull over safely. Meanwhile, a second tractor-trailer, a 2024 Peterbilt, operated by 66-year-old Barbara L. Armstrong of Creston, Iowa, was traveling in the passing lane as she attempted to overtake Ayers’ vehicle.

While both trucks occupied the highway’s primary lanes, 28-year-old Austin E. Leonard of LaFayette, riding a 2008 Harley-Davidson, approached from behind and tried to pass between the two trucks. After clearing the trucks, Leonard lost control of the motorcycle, veered into the guide rail on the west shoulder, and was ejected from his bike. He suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, where he remains in critical condition.
