Binghamton, NY – Fatal Three-Vehicle Crash on I-81 at Exit 12

Binghamton, NY (October 9, 2025) – One person has died after a tragic three-vehicle crash on I-81 at the Exit 12 off-ramp on Thursday morning, October 9. The Broome County Sheriff’s Office reported that the collision occurred around 11:05 a.m. when a U-Haul truck towing another vehicle was struck by a red SUV. The impact forced the U-Haul into a New York State Department of Transportation attenuator truck. The U-Haul caught fire with the driver trapped inside.

Deputies and DOT crews rushed to extinguish the flames and rescue the driver, who was rushed to UHS Wilson Medical Center. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at approximately 12:40 p.m. Deputies revealed that the SUV had attempted to cross multiple lanes to take the Exit 12 ramp, causing the deadly collision. The sheriff’s Accident Reconstruction Unit is continuing its investigation. The identity of the victim will be released once the family has been notified.
