Washington Co., VA – Multiple Injured After Three-Vehicle Crash on I-81/MM 16

Washington County, VA (May 29, 2025) – Multiple people were injured early Thursday morning, May 29, in a serious crash involving two passenger vehicles and a tractor-trailer on Interstate 81 North in Washington County. The crash happened shortly after 7:00 a.m. near mile marker 16.

According to the Virginia State Police (VSP), two vehicles had occupants trapped inside, and one caught fire following the collision. Firefighters from the Abingdon Fire Department were among the first to arrive and quickly began rescuing those trapped in the wreckage. A VSP trooper also stepped in to help extinguish the burning vehicle, preventing further danger. All injured individuals were safely extricated and received immediate medical attention at the scene.

They were then transported to nearby hospitals by the Washington County Life Saving Crew and the Abingdon Ambulance Service for further treatment.

The Virginia State Police are investigating the crash and working to determine what caused the incident.
