Timber Ridge, VA (July 3, 2024) – A multi-vehicle accident on I-81 between the Timber Ridge and Fairfield exits resulted in serious injuries on the morning of July 3rd. , Timber Ridge, VA – Serious Injuries in Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-81/MM 197The crash, which occurred at 6:49 a.m. at mile marker 197, involved a tractor-trailer and two pickup trucks pulling campers. Responding agencies included the South River and Rockbridge Baths volunteer fire departments, Lexington Fire and Rescue, the Fairfield Rescue Squad, and Rockbridge County Fire and Rescue. According to Rockbridge County Fire and Rescue Deputy Chief Kevin Moore, the two pickup trucks, a 2024 Ford F250 and a 2020 GMC 2500, had pulled onto the shoulder due to a mechanical issue with one of the vehicles. The drivers, who were outside their vehicles, were struck by a 2020 Freightliner tractor-trailer that ran off the right side of the interstate. Eduardo Ozuna, 32, of Penitas, Texas, the driver of the GMC 2500, suffered critical injuries and was airlifted to a Roanoke hospital. Javier Garcia, 40, of Palmview, Texas, the driver of the F250, and his passenger, Gisela Garcia, 35, sustained injuries and were taken to Carilion Rockbridge Community Hospital. The Freightliner driver, John W. Ritchards, 30, of Mustang, Oklahoma, was uninjured but cited for failure to maintain control. The crash remains under investigation by the Virginia State Police.
