South Abington Twp., PA – Injury Wrong-Way Crash on I-81 near Layton Rd. Opas
South Abington Township, PA (November 2, 2025) – A serious wrong-way crash believed to involve DUI left three people hospitalized on Sunday, November 2, on Interstate 81 North near the Layton Road overpass. According to state police at Dunmore, the collision happened around 12:15 a.m. when a southbound vehicle entered the northbound lanes and struck another car head-on near mile marker 193. The engine compartment of one vehicle caught fire shortly after the crash.
Responding officers from the Pennsylvania State Police, along with the Chinchilla Hose Company and Pennsylvania Ambulance, extinguished the flames and helped remove the victims from the wreckage. Both drivers and a passenger in the wrong-way vehicle sustained serious injuries and were transported to Geisinger Community Medical Center for treatment.
Investigators suspect alcohol impairment was a contributing factor and are working to confirm the driver’s blood alcohol content.
