Smyth Co., VA –  I-81 S Injury Crash Near Exit 50 in Atkins

Smyth County, VA (July 1, 2025) – A serious crash involving injuries occurred on the southbound lanes of Interstate 81 near mile marker 52 on July 1, one mile north of County Road 622 (Exit 50) in the Atkins area of Smyth County. The Virginia State Police and local emergency responders arrived on the scene shortly after the collision was reported. Several vehicles were involved in the crash, which blocked the entirety of the southbound lanes. Emergency crews quickly worked to treat those injured and to manage the chaotic traffic situation. According to reports, multiple individuals sustained injuries in the collision. At least one person was transported to a regional hospital, while others received treatment on-site. The extent of the injuries remains under investigation. The exact cause of the collision is still being determined.
