Scott Township, PA – Car Crash Claims Five Lives on I-81 near MM 199.6
Scott Township, PA (January 16, 2024) – On January 16, 2024, a tragic multi-vehicle accident on I-81 resulted in the loss of five individuals from New York. The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. near mile marker 199.6, close to Waverly. According to the preliminary report, a minivan lost control and collided with the median. Subsequently, four occupants exited the van, along with a family member from another vehicle. Unfortunately, all five individuals were struck by an oncoming tractor-trailer. Emergency responders, including Lackawanna County Coroner Timothy Rowland, multiple fire departments, and state police, spent several hours at the scene. The northbound lanes of Interstate 81 in Scott Township were temporarily closed after the tragic incident. Investigators have not yet disclosed details about the number of victims and the circumstances leading to the collision. The Lackawanna County Coroner’s office, in collaboration with relevant authorities, is actively working to provide more information on this devastating event.
