Schuylkill Co., PA – Driver Killed in Crash with Tractor-Trailer on I-81

Schuylkill County, PA (September 3, 2025) – A two-vehicle collision in Butler Township, Schuylkill County, claimed the life of an elderly driver on Tuesday afternoon, September 2. According to the Pennsylvania State Police in Frackville, the crash occurred shortly before 2:30 p.m. along I-81 northbound.

Investigators reported that a passenger car traveling in both lanes struck the rear driver’s side tire of a tractor-trailer operating in the right lane. The impact caused significant damage to the car, trapping the driver inside. Emergency responders extricated the victim and transported him to Lehigh Valley Hospital–Schuylkill East. He was later airlifted to Lehigh Valley Hospital–Cedar Crest for advanced care.

The driver, identified as 81-year-old Esau Foster of Kingston, PA, sadly succumbed to his injuries. The Lehigh County Coroner’s Office pronounced him deceased shortly after arrival. The truck driver was not injured. Troopers closed part of I-81 for several hours while crash reconstruction teams examined the scene.

Authorities are still reviewing what may have caused the car to drift between lanes before the collision.
