Marathon, NY – New Jersey Man Killed in Two-Vehicle Crash on I-81/MM 41

Marathon, NY (August 17, 2024) – A tragic two-vehicle crash on I-81 in Cortland County claimed the life of a New Jersey man on Thursday, August 15th. According to the New York State Police, the accident occurred shortly after 1 p.m. near mile marker 41 in Marathon. The victim, 26-year-old MD Sanzid Bin Rashid of the Bronx, was driving a Honda SUV northbound when he encountered slow traffic due to ongoing construction. In an attempt to avoid the slowdown, Rashid swerved from the right lane to the left lane, where he collided with a Toyota. Both vehicles veered off the roadway, and the Honda overturned, coming to rest on its side. Despite the efforts of first responders, Rashid was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Toyota sustained injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The New York State Police Traffic Incident Management Unit and Bureau of Criminal Investigation are looking into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
