Kingsport, TN – Driver Airlifted After Rollover Crash on I-81 Near MM 55

Kingsport, TN (October 25, 2025) – A driver was seriously injured on Friday, October 24, following a rollover crash on Interstate 81 near mile marker 55, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP). The accident occurred shortly before 11 AM and caused temporary lane closures in the area.

Investigators say a Jeep Compass was traveling south when it veered off the roadway and entered the grassy median. The vehicle struck a cable barrier, rolled onto its roof, and came to rest on its left side. Emergency responders arrived quickly and airlifted the driver to a nearby hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) reported that all southbound lanes were closed for a short period after the crash, with traffic backing up toward the Colonial Heights exit. Crews cleared the scene, and all lanes were reopened by 12:20 PM.
