Augusta County, VA – Multiple Traffic Crashes on I-81 at MM 228, MM 223, MM 91 and Near I-81/I-64 Interchange Cause Injuries
Augusta County, VA (August 4, 2023) – Several separate traffic crashes occurred within miles of the I-81 and I-64 interchange in Augusta County on Thursday, August 3rd, as reported by Virginia State Police.
The first crash took place in the northbound lanes of I-81 at the 228-mile marker around 12:20 p.m. The following two crashes happened in the northbound lanes of I-81, one at the 223-mile marker and another at the I-81/I-64 interchange. The chain reaction of these accidents caused traffic congestion in the area.
As a result of the collisions, the driver of an involved tractor-trailer and the driver and passenger of an involved armored vehicle sustained non-life-threatening injuries. They were quickly transported to Augusta Health for medical treatment.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, identified as an adult male from Canada, received a citation for following too closely.
Later, at 5:45 p.m., state police responded to a seven-vehicle crash in the westbound lanes of I-81 at the 91-mile marker. While several injuries were reported, fortunately, none were life-threatening.
The authorities are currently investigating the cause of the crashes.
